Try going to this site and see if the program there gives you the same number that I got 4.15 to 1.

http://www.smokemup.com/auto_math/rear_end.php

If the link won't work then you can go to www.smokemup.com and look for the auto math tab at the top of the page. Then scroll down for rear gear ratio.

BTW: I used a 27 inch tire and 3100 RPM> The numbers shown are the program default.

The program said that you needed the MPH and RPM information from your 1 to 1 transmission ratio. That would be 4th gear if you have a 4 speed.

The correct tire sizes for a '79 are Standard 225-70-15 with a stated diameter of 27.2 inches, optional was the 255-60-15 with a stated diameter of 27.1 inches. You could go out to the garage and measure your actual tire diameter.

try this one instead. http://www.smokemup.com/auto_math/mph_range.php

You'll have to pick your tranny. Tire diameter on 255/60/15's is 27 inches. 225/70/15 = 27.4

if your not sure, plug your tire size in here

sounds like the stock 3:55 gears to me.

Mine '79 Autom. was changed out by a prior owner to 3:08 and at 3K RPM I'm at approx. 75 MPH. But the calc. will tell you for sure

3100 rpm with a 27.1" tire your speedo shoud read:

With 3.08 - 81.1, 3.36 - 74.3, 3.55 - 70.4, 3.73 - 67 mph, 4.11 - 60.1.

Easy way to check rear gear ratio:

Lift rear off ground. Spin tire 10 times and count the revolutions of the driveshaft. eg. 3.08 will turn almost 31. 4.11 just over 41.
