I picked up this alternator at a wrecking yard for $15 because it has the same mounting dimensions as my stock alt. It's either a 100 or 130 amp unit.
My question is what are the pins on the connector for? I don't have a clue what would connect to what. If somebody knows what each pin is for I would appreciate some help.
Of these four pins you should only use 2, you can buy a conversion harness, one side plugs into the CS alternator (the new one) and the other side plugs into the stock SI connector, the S terminal (far right, slightly larger than the other 3) is for the charging wire, the F next to it isn't used, the L next to that is to excite the alternator, this is the wire going through the GEN light, without it the alt will not excite since it needs to see current draw on that pinout first (the GEN light serves that function, it's called a pre switch resistor over here). The one next to that one (P) is also not used

That will do it, how cool. This will be a cheap upgrade. I'll have something like $30 total into it. I just measured the case and it is 130mm so that should be the 85 to 105 amp unit. Thanks again for the help, guys.
Burners, my knowledge may be a bit dated, maybe there are fixed out there for those CS series alts, but some 5 years ago they were known as the really worst alts on the market, and far as I know, still are.....
the trick thing to do is swap the pulley/spacers around for belt offsets and then bolt the SI17 larger diameter alts in the place the SI10's used to go.....17 is rated around 108 amps....car to call out at parts house is..a '79 Seville with RW Defogger....
works fine, plug in....
Problem is with the smaller diameter late alts the cooling fans are junk, the diameter is too small for airflow especially over the frame/diodes/regulator....and the problem of hot exhause right over the thing in a RWD configuration....
up top in rear in a typical FWD config...or down lo in front....it may survive better.....BUT...just ask any C4 owner what he thinks of the CS alts after a few miles....
TT, no I don't have a serpentine setup but the pulley can be easily changed.
mrvette, I think their reputation has improved and businesses like alternatorparts.com sell those kits with larger bearings and a heat sink on the back of the case.
Ordered one last night, it is actually cheaper than a new plug from the local parts store. I will prolly hard splice it in once I decided on an alt location, might move it to the passenger side and get rid of the idler arm.
