Default Brake problem solved, Hydra boost

I went to a friend’s house to tig weld a firing pin spring for a very old rifle that belongs to another friend of mine (he was trying to remove it when it broke) and noticed that he had two Chevy ¾ ton diesel trucks without motors sitting in his yard. I got to looking at them and noticed that they both have the hydra assist brakes. So I offered him $50 (the local junk yards want $75 and I have to remove it myself, no lines) for the whole setup with the lines, he said yes. I am very pleased with this find; it will save me some time at the local junk yard. Now I just have to find the diagram on how to adapt this system to my stock steering system. I think Norval has posted the diagram of how to connect the lines to the stock system on the forum before.

I got my hydraboost from a 92 Chevy 1 ton truck. I bought the truck for the big block and the hydraboost was an added bonus. I don't have it together in my Vette yet so don't know all the details about the install.

I was able to use the power steering pump from the truck to replace the stock Vette pump. I will also be using the serpentine setup from the truck so there should not be any issues as far as everything lining up.

I am not sure about the differences between diesels setup -vs- gasoline setups, but can you get the pump from the truck? Can you adapt the serpentine belt setup from the truck, or was it gone with the engine?

The main thing I remember that Norval said he did different from the truck setup was he flipped the hydraboost over so that the lines were on the bottom instead of the top for a cleaner look.

Hope this helps!

As far as plumbing the hydraboost unit, you need a high pressure hose directly from the pump to the booster unit. Then a second high pressure hose from the booster unit down to the control valve on the linkage. Make sure when you route this hose that you actually steer the car lock to lock and watch the hose move with the linkage. You do not want the hose chaffing on underhood parts with the movement.

I assume that you will be able to adapt your current low pressure hose from the control valve back up to the pump reservoir. You will need a second low pressure hose from the booster unit back to the pump reservoir. You can tee it into the first low pressure hose near the reservoir or some hydraboost pumps actually have a second spout on the reservoir for this hose.

I installed a hydraboost from a Hummer, and its really jerkey when I press the pedal. It was brand new, so maybe it takes a little time to break in? Just curious?

I lost touch with this thread, sorry. Thanks to all that responded. After reading all the responses and looking at the link. I think I have the idea on how to plumb the Hydra boost. I still have to get over there and remove it. I was thinking of disassembling it and powder coating it. I will look into this a little more to see what it will take to do this.

Thanks Neal
