4 speed frame = automatic frame with a small tab welded on to it for the clutch linkage and a welded in non-removable transmission crossmember. As far as years are concerned, I'd wait for someone who knows more than I to post about this, but I believe the frames are the same for all the c3's. Certainly 68-77 must be the same.
As far as I can physically tell, '68-'74 are the same. The '75 & on up is where the back end of the frame changed drastically for the "hydraulic bumper shocks", which '74 did NOT have. My '68s & my '74 look identical back there, except a '74's rear bumper absorbed shock through a "sliding" mechanism that was on each side of the rear of the frame. This you would remove for use on a pre-'74 car. Now there may be an extra hole or two here and there for this "sliding mechanism", but it looks the same as my '68s. '68 frames also did not have the "angular" gussets between the main rear lower perimeter crossmember and the doglegs(kick-ups)over the trailing arms. This applies to almost all '68 frames. Very late '68s(last couple thousand)DID HAVE these angular "gussets".
