Default Part 3, Serpintine Setup Complete

Here are the complete pic's. I started it lastnight, and all
was well I am so happy everything worked out.
I have the smog pump pipe off, and it make no noise what-
soever. I forgot how damn good my car sounds, makes me
want to rush it, but i know I cant. Wish my 406 was done

the only problem is the alternator. its not wired wrong, 2
wire to the top, 1 on the rear. with the key on, it makes a hum.
I took the belt off to spin it with the key on (spin it by hand)
I could feel some force of it not really wanting to turn, then
I disconnect the 2 wire plug, and it spins freely not sure
whats going on.

Almost sounds like your alternator is trying to become a motor. Did you double check your connections to make sure they are correct?

OK, I do not have this wired wrong. there is 1 skinny brown
wire with the red wire that is with the plug, then
you have the thick red wire that is the battery. I
still have a slight almost unnoticed hum. could this
be the alt itself? or be bad?

Off the 4 pins, the slightly bigger one takes the red wire, the brown one for the idiot light goes to the middle one of the 3 smaller pins, the other 2 are not used

Just got back from the shop, It was checked, and it has a bad diode.
I never seen this before, where they hum a little. He said there was
a part that was sticking to make that noise . thanks all.
what puzzles me is it still charges.

A diode acts like a one-way valve. It should let current flow from the alternator to the battery but block flow from the battery to the alternator. If the diode is bad it is letting current flow through the alternator windings and attempting to make the alternator act like a motor. It would be interesting to see if the alternator would actually move without the belt connected.

I tried that, it will not spin, but has a little resistance spinning,
if you try to spin by hand, unplug it, and it spins freely

Sigh, I guess you are a bit confused by the physics involved, but there has to be mechanical force...turning of the input shaft, in order for the device (alt) to make energy of a differant sort....electricity...~12-14 volts at ~amps...depending on demand.....so the greater the demand, the greater the drag on the input shaft via the belt and engine loading....

if you unplug the regulator, there is NOTHING to energize the rotor, hense little or no drag on it's spinning....so no input, no output, and physics is happy....

there is no practical way any pure alternator is going to spin upon applied voltage, it's a function of the 6 diodes in the main diode pack.....
now in the olde tyme daze, a generator was little else but a brush motor, similar to a starter motor, with a belt drive and a set of brushes and commutator to switch the voltage from one winding to another over the 'poles' of the spinning part...(armateur)....

in fact an alternator is very similar to the device used in LARGE electrical generating plants, NUCLEAR and such, the outputs are the same, just that in our vechicles, the units have diode packs to convert that output to DC current instead of AC....

don't want to snowball anyone, just the facts...
IM if you are confused....no sweat...
