Default old vin tag/new windshield post?

One of my winter projects is to fix my windshied frame. I can see the passenger corner needs work or replacement. Once I get all the trim and window out, I may want to replace the posts also. Can I simply remove the old vin tag and reinstall it on the new post? If so, what rivits do I use and where can I get them? If it isn't this simple (from a legal standpoint) what is the correct legal proceedure?

Those rivets are out there. I thought Dr Rebuild or Paragon had them, but I don't see them in the catalogs. Maybe it was Caldonia. You might get a copy of Hemmings and try there.

They can be found on EBay frequently. Search for rosette rivets.

I was lucky, in that I replaced the upper half of the posts and the header piece. So, my VIN tag stayed right where it was.

If you NEED to replace that section of post, then this may be an alternative:

Cut the section of post open (once removed) and grind the
back side of the rivets to remove them without affecting the
part that is seen. Then, re-attach the VIN tag with rivet heads
with some epoxy - or good adhesive of your choice.

Of course, legally, you should proceed by contacting your DMV
and seeing what the law says in your state.

Some folks say that the frame stamp is the true VIN number for the car, but everyone looks at the WS post tag for ID.

You could also make some rosettes with pop rivets and a file .... but the educated eye can tell.

Good Luck

$15 for 2 pop rivets? I used regular pop rivets, like $2 for 50.

This is a touchy subject depending on where you live. Some DMV's will assume a car is stolen if you don't have the original rivets. In some states it is illegal to own the rosette rivets. In any case you should document the process with pictures in case there is a problem down the road. Also when it comes time to sell it the next owner might be the one with a problem. Joe

Actually, the listing says that is $15 for ONE rivet.

Joe makes a good point. Not having the correct rosette design can cause questions to be asked. And I believe in some jurisdictions the installation of the VIN tag must be witnessed and certified by an appropriate official.
