I'm curious to get your feedback on the Pertronix Ignitor II and Flamethrower Coils...anyone use this setup? If so, any problems...do you like it...etc.?
Thanks.

It really didn't make much difference in my car. I have the Ignitor II and the Flamethrower. The only thing that really changed was the idle. It became more even after I installed them. I didn't notice any difference during high RPM.
My friend has a 1965 Mustang and the Ignitor made a nice difference in his car. Much more responsive.
Its not too expensive and will probably make your plugs last longer. Depending on how much play you have in your distributor shaft, installation is pretty straight-forward.

I used that set-up for years before upgrading to DUI ignition & had no problems. Clean revs to 7000 rpm. Biggest advantage over stock is NEVER having to set points or even OPEN the distributor cap again.
Put a Pertronix HEI upgrade kit in my stock '80 distributor. The kit worked well but the coil gave me problems. I sent the coil back to Pertronix for a replacement under warranty but have not had time to swap it back in yet. The GM coil is working fine so maybe I am not in a hurry.

I've had no problems with either the Pertronix I and II, or the coil which I've used for several years now......I have the II now and keep the module and magnet ring from the I for a spare just in case.....
Although many site problems with "the Pertronix failed and left me stranded in BFE" I have had it for 2 years and installed 4 of em on friends cars with no problems. Much cheaper for me since i have a 68 with a mechanical tach cable and the only other choices were points or the MSD mech tach distributer for $399.
I've had the earlier/older Pertronix ignition module (I?) to replace the points in my old tach drive distr since the mid 90s - maybe 8 years or better now (couple years of storage in there). Seems like back then I paid about $50. It has worked flawlessly (knock on wood), improved gas mileage, cured an intermittent misfire at higher RPMs I had, plugs last forever and doesn't require regular changes or adjustment of the points. Maybe the emissions are improved for all I know. I just use a plain ol' stock type coil - fancy 'performance' coils have never really shown themselve to make a difference in my case.
It has 2 wires instead of 1 so it's not 'correct' according to well... if that matters.
I suppose one could carry an extra module or an extra set of points if it came down to needing the assurance for a roadside repair and if one did longer runs/trips or whatever... It's been so long but I'm thinking these can be swapped w/o pulling the distributor...?
A matter of fact the same unit in my car was unscrewed while I was installing a new vacuum advance unit and I stupidly turned the car over which bent the hell out of the bracket which holds the module. I simply banged it straight again, reverified the clearnce between the module and magnet ring and it fired up first turn of the key. 10,000 miles later it's still running strong.

I have had one in my car since I bought it in 99 and have had no problems. I have the original type and a flamethrower coil in mine. Car seemed to run smoother after installation. I would do it again.
Installed mine in 2000, with now problems since. I would suggest reading, and following the directions carefully, I had an older dist. in my 69 (not stock) so I had some shaft play that had to be dealt with. However, it was easy. It beats the old points set up by miles. Especially if you do not want to shell out the buck for the MSD or mallory Tach Drive dist. WHat wire did you P II users hook to for power.
I changed over from a Pertronix unit to a Crane XR1 this past weekend. While I never had a problem with the Pertronix unit for the 3 or 4 years that I had it installed I recently experienced the engine cutting out on the highway at 3K rpm and then kicking back in. The engine also backfired quite a bit while this was happening. I changed the Pertronix to the Crane unit and the problem went away. I also like the idea of having a rev limiter which the Crane has. For $69 it may be an alternative to the Pertronix and you won't have to disassemble the distributor to set up endplay. The Crane picks up it's signal from the cam lobe on the distributor. Just my $.02.
