Need to replace the worn speakers in my brother's '76 Vette for xmas.
What speakers will fit into the dash? According to Crutchfield they are 4x6 and the only have ONE that fits! Polk/MOMO MMC460
4"x6" 2-way plate speakers for 119!
I'm not looking to spend that much and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations. He has the factory HU in there.
Also - How hard is it to replace them? I'm hoping the covers just unscrew.
I tried the Polk in my 81 and they wouldn't seat in the opening all the way. I went to tweeter and bought the boston acoustic, perfect fit and good sound quality. boston acoustic The speaker covers on the 81 just lift off and then there are a couple of screws holding the speakers in.
I managed to get 2 5,25 speakers in the dash looks completely stock
only thing i had to do was to take off alittle off the back on the passenger side lower dash so the magnet would go free.
And of course i did some mounting brackets so they fit in the 4x6 space
I put some pioneer 2-way 4x6's in my 77, sounds good, but can't really hear them for the memphis audio's and amp from the back ....... oh, $49 bucks/pair @ circuit city ........Robert
I presume this is w/ an aftermarket stereo? (orig radio/stere was designed for 10 ohms).
Has anyone tried those foam 'baffles' in Crutchfield etc? W/ the backside of the speakers pointing straight down and completely open to the dash - I was wondering if one of those foam enclosures might help the acoustics?

Pioneer 4X6 will work fine. To install, the dash pad must be removed in a 76.
It is the factory stereo - everything in the car is original from '76. Are there compatablity issues that I should be aware of before purchasing any 4"x6" speakers due to the originals being 10 ohm?
I did find some NOS 4"x6" (10 ohm) but would imagine that anything made today would be an improvement on the factory speakers.
You can get away with 8 ohm speakers. You are right, the factory speakers were paper and had a magnet the size of a quarter. It isn't worth the trouble to enclose the front speakers, these little guys don't have much bass response anyway. I used Infinity plates, too, they sound great! The local stereo dealer sold me a set of demos for half price. It was a pain getting the driver side in. Joe

I bought 2-way delco speakers for mine, they sound just fine with the stock radio. They are probably available from most of the supporting vendors, got mine from the final detail. They are called "upgrade" speakers. Don't use modern 4 ohm speakers, they will overload the output circuits of the radio and cause a failure in a very short time.
I don't think the dash configuration is the same, but I put pioneer 4x6 from Crutchfield in my 82 and they just dropped in. Either way, Crutchfield can tell you on the phone beforehand what you'll have to do to gain access and which speakers in their catalog will fit the enclosure.
I also have Infinity 4x6s. They are "plate" speakers with 2 components in a 4"x6" space. If you can afford a few bucks more for a good brand like Infinity, don't skimp and get crappy speakers. You'd just regret it in the end. I'm very happy with mine, just need the better radio now!

Warning: The speaker recommendations you are getting for Infinity, Sony, Pioneer etc etc etc are all 4 ohm speakers AFAIK! Many are excellent speakers superior to the GM stuff. But they are a lower impedance.
No 8 ohm speakers left AFAIK except GM. GM does have 2 different 10 ohm 4X6s avail - one is supposedly an 'upgrade' speaker but I use the term loosely considering it is a GM speaker afterall. It does have a larger magnet than the original tiny square magnets.
They might help if you had the clearance to install them. As it was, the replacement aftermarkets were pretty tight with almost ZERO room beneath the new larger magnet for anything.

There is very little room under the newer, larger aftermarket magnet to stuff a foam enclosure between them and the dash
Anyone know where I can find this GM "upgrade" speaker? I found the factory ones on ecklers.com for ~$15 a piece, but was hoping to find something better then factory.

i thought mine were a pain to install because i had to take the dash pad out, i have 4x6 pioneers and some thing is still buzzing up there from vibrating when there is alot of bass.... installed along with them is a new radio and power amplifer and like 6" round speakers in the kick panels these are also pioneers and sound great....if i had to do it all over agian i would abandon the dash speakers and go straight to kick panel speakers...
