What is the going rate for a rear end? I can pick up a '77 differential with 3.08s from someone that backhalved their car but I'm just curious on an acceptable price range. I'm thinking of rebuilding my sloppy rear end using 4.11s and then having the one with 3.08s to swap in if I was ever going to take a trip. The RPMs doesn't look too bad with the 4.11s with the 200-4R. It is like 3.08s and a TH350.
Since you have an overdrive tranny why not use a set of 373's and have the best of both worlds without dropping and swapping differentials when you want to drive 100 miles or more?
Rebuilding yours is the best bet,you know what you have from the start. Buying a used differential for $500+ is risky and will cost you more money and time in the long run. I'm always looking at swap meets for differentials and never amazed at some of the junk for sale.
examples: nice looking housing from the front until I turned it around and the "guts" were rusted solid. The guy wanted $300 for it. Another guy had a "BB 67" rear end with 4:11's looked good until I saw a 1" hole blown through the carrier. Guy wanted $275 for it but did say it needed work!
