Default Gas Fumes

We have had our car in a storage facility for some time and decided to park it at home now so we will drive it more frequently. When we parked it in the garage, we noticed very strong gas fumes (strong enough to stink up the house as well).

I did a visual inspection of the motor, both on and off and did not see any signs of leakage. It appears to be coming from the rear of the car (tank area).

Any ideas on what to look for? We can't park this beauty in the garage.

My 77 was leaking gas from the fuel line in the area of the right rear wheel well. The fuel line runs near the frame in front of the wheel and rusts in the same place where the frames sometimes rust. Good luck.

Look at the tank as well...in the area of the tank supports. Mine was very clean looking, but it had numerous pinholes right above the tank support (where you couldn't see them). The only way I noticed it was that the anti-squeek pad was wet.

Plus, your 73 has a fuel separator on the drivers side
of the tank. The vent goes to the separator ... then the fumes should
vent through a steel line to the charcoal canister that is mounted
at the bottom/back inside the driver's front fender.

Check the steel vent line for rust/rot. Check the fuel separator for leaks.
Check the supply/return steel lines (passenger side) for leaks.

Maybe a fuel pump about to go .... they sometimes drip from a weep
hole before dying forever.

My 79 has intermittent fumes as well. I checked all the obvious but have never found the problem. It comes and goes but when it comes the fumes are very strong. I really can't tell where they seem to be coming from. Sometime the odor is toward the rear of the car and sometimes it appears to be coming from the engine compartment. There are not visible drips in my garage not any signs that I can see around the body or lines.

Mine had no drips either. I would suggest putting your car up on jackstands and removing the spare tire carrier and housing and checking the straps that hold up your tank.

My fumes were intermittant as well...it only happened when the car was running...I am sure this was because that was the only time the tank vibrated.

Funny you should mention this as it seems that the smell is more prevelent from the right rear side. This will be the first thing I check.

Thank you all for your recommendations. I am new to this forum as well as this car (and Corvettes in general).
