I think when a lot of car guys think "custom" they think of the old George Barris style customs with lots of gaudy body mods. That thought turns me off too.
There are lots of tasteful cars that are "custom" here on the forum, but the true old style hot rod customs all have some extensive body mods and I think that is why you are hearing some negative comments. Some of those old customs are very fugly.
I have not seen a George Barris car yet that I actually like. He gave modifying a bad rep.
Here's a riced out piece of **** according to some "Air in the tire not original types".......If they say something silly about my car....I don't wait for them at the end of the race...I just return to the pits.
If anybody tells you not to mod your ride, invite him to come with you to the pits of the drag strip... if he opens his mouth again, just step back when the fists start flying!
I'm from "the other side" I guess...the older I get the more I want things the way the were...hard to do that when someone has gone "custom"...note my signature.
But, as others have said, it's your car, do as you like, others will deal with it or get over it.
My only advice, your car may be a plain Jane 77 but it's an original plain Jane. If your gonna go custom why not start with a car that has been modified in some way already. I've often said that my next Vette (a stable mate for 2TONE82) would be a non original chrome bumper car. This way I can build the motor through the hood, stopping just before losing total visibility of the right hand lane, and going bankrupt.
You will see lots of nice mods on here like stinger hoods, twin-turbos, (not a lot of superchargers hint! hint!), suspension upgrades and plenty of how-to-do stuff.
Welcome to YOUR new club!
Pete
PS Mine might be matching numbers but only the budget and wife is stopping me from making it into a supercharged Batmobile!
What do you think my advice is going to be.................................
I've been trashed a number of times on this forum because mine's a custom ---- but it's still a great source of information , so I keep coming back......
As long as you're doing what makes you happy --- DO IT !!!!
Lets all make theme exactly the same and sit around and watch the blue book value go up. How stimulating. Not sure if I could handle all that excitement.
I am the original owner of a '71 coupe which I am preparing to restore. Through the years, I have changed a few things on it, but all of those changes can be undone in the unlikely event I was to sell the car. I have custom wheels, and a lot of chrome under the hood. The underside of the hood and the spare tire carrier are painted with black Imron. The spare tire carrier bracket is chromed. Since the picture here was taken, I have added factory sidepipes. In my upcoming restoration, I plan to redo all of the extra chrome and probably add some more, paint the frame and engine compartment with one of the new durable paints and probably add some 17" wheels. I will also probably add leather seats to my standard interior and put on some fancy radiator hoses. Some may find it to be heresy to change anything on a one-owner car, but I don't care. I want it the way I want it.

Nick after 33 yrs its time to make it as you really want it to be!!!!!! doesn't sound like heresy to me.... sounds like you finally loosened up....just kidding. i agree with your assessment "bottom line do as you like"
Take a look at the C5 guys, do ever hear them say, why would you do that? thats not factory!!" No, you just don't hear that from them. The reason why is there is no way they will ever get what they pay for. So instead of cash value, they replace it with the enjoyment of satisfaction, and to many that is priceless. Us c3 guys have a different issue at hand, our numbers are much smaller, and we are right on the line between classic rare masterpeices of GM and well, just your standard C3. May early c3 owners may ask why you would do what you do. but thats cause there is a payout when making something numbers matching. They can get out what they put into it. In the end you just need to decide whats more important, MONEY, or ENJOYMENT.
Well I can honestly say that I recieved a VERY different welcome here then anywhere else, and I am very thankful for it. I saw a few pics that were posted of their custom Vettes (8T1-7T9 BIONIC VETTE and 454Can-Am) and I say Kudos to them, great cars.
And a comment about no performance parts and all ACP stuff...dont make me laugh. Im here to further the love and cheer for the car, no disgrace it.
Someone asked about plans, they are still white and black with some shades of grey here and there. At first thought I have a picture somewhere along the lines of 454Can-Am's car...but not really. Its hard to explain how it will end up in the looks department, thats the grey area.
I have a complete 90 coupe that has been rolled. I bought it with the intention of doing a frame swap for all the updated suspension, motor, tranny and other goodies. Not so sure that is the route I am going to take it now or not. My dad has finally started to give me some input on the idea. I have several choices for motors but currently have the orig 350 with a blower on the drawing board.
Im planning on doing a complete overhaul with the interior. If it goes how I plan, the only real vette piece inside will be the dash. I plan on fabracating door panels and the center console.
Once I get my shed cleared out to get the car inside and start to tear into it I will start posting pics. Winter is upon me and my goal is to have as much done by summer as possible. I dont plan on doing everything at once, trying to keep it as close to driveable when summer hits as possible. My '98 Jeep Wrangler with a 6' lift is nice, but the Vette gets lots more looks...and ladies.
Also....I dont really care what others think but it was harsh the way I was talked down at more then one Vette club. But that just made me want to do the opposite of what most said so I can laugh it up when I show them up.
I only experienced negative comments one time from a 73 NCR type guy. After about 30 seconds of listening to his blather about me "ruining" my 72, I jerked out my wallet, looked in it, and informed him his picture was not on any of my money.
It's like fine art, each has a different appreciation of what makes a masterpiece.
