Finding out if your car has the original motor or not is actually
quite easy. Basically, the last 5 numbers of your v.i.n. are stamped
on the front of the engine directly below where the passenger side
head is bolted. There is an assembly date, and horsepower suffix
there also, but let's just start with that. They are on a pad which
juts out, and is probably full of grease.
Clean it off and read the numbers. If you have trouble deciphering
them, post them here. There are tons of people here who can decode
it for you.
If we find out that it is the original engine, than unless it has been
over-bored, it is a 454 c.i.d. If it is not the original, then there is
an actual part number on the block which we can further decipher
as to 396, 427, etc.....etc.....
And then there's casting dates also......
Let's not get ahead of ourselves, check the pad and let us know. www.mortec.com is a great resource for this investigative stuff.
Thanks again Mark, I was hoping for a quick easy way to id motors? I going prob this w-end to look at two 73 454s & a 70 427, but if someone told me the motor wasn't original but it was original size eg.427, I would no way of knowing if he was straight up or pullin my chain Is there a site I could down load some part# info?
Thanks
Randy
