I have new outside door handles to install on my '75 and need to know how to remove the inside door panel. Do I need a special tool to take off the inside door handle, window crank/handle, and the inside door lock ****? After that, is everything just screws and clips?
To remove the door panel open the door and look under the panel. There should be screws and tabs holding the door panel on. There is also a lip at the top it slides over to hold the top in place. The door handle is held on by a screw. Pull the door handle like you are opening the door and look on the inside and you will see the screw. The lock **** is held on by a clip, some use a special tool sold by Corvette vendors. I would advise buying a Haynes Manual for our Corvettes. You can buy them at any major auto parts store such as Autozone. It covers dissassembly on most tasks like removing the door panel and other such things.
Once you have removed the door panel the outside door handle is held on by two nuts inside the door. The forward most one is relatively easy to undo but the rearward one is a little tougher to reach. There is also a linkage that has to be disconnected to remove the door handle. It is a relatively simple job to do, just take your time and be careful when removing and reinstalling the handles that you dont hit your paint. I would also take pictures or sketch out how the linkage hooked up inside the door. I had mine off for about two months while painting and I forgot how the linkage was situated in the door. Good luck.
