Default Rear Spindel Assembly

I'm going to send in both 72 rear spindels to be rebuilt with new bearings, seals, etc. I've done the shock mount, spring, half shaft, strut rod removal before but never the spindel assm. My rotors & calipers are off, and want to know how to remove the whole spindel.
Any and all info appreciated.
Eddie

First I would remove the castle nut in the back and see if your axle pulls out. Then you can more easily remove the four nuts on the outside of the dust shield. With some persuasion the whole thing should then come off the trailing arm. If you're axles come out easily like mine did you may be in trouble. The guy at Bairs where I sent mine said the races have probably spun on the shaft. Good luck.

P.S. If your parking brakes are bad have them done now. Putting the springs on with the axle in place will put you in a very bad mood.

Unfortunatly I just installed all new stainless P-Brake hardware. (not too bad) Found out my bearings are bad a little too late. After the spindel flange is off...the whole thing comes out after the castle nut & spindel support nuts are removed???
Thanks for the reply.

The spindle must be pressed or driven out with a hammer and spindle knocker tool. if they come out after the castle nut comes off you have bigger problems.

After looking at parts breakdown pics, I was under the impression the spindel, caliper shield, caliper mount bracket, Spindel support bracket & all bearings will come out of the trailing arm as a unit. Am I wrong??

That's right. It's getting at the four nuts holding everything on the trailing arm that isn't real easy. If your axels don't slide out easily you'll have to wiggle behind the brake shoes to get the retainers and springs off. I hope I dont have to do this again for a long time.

Great..hope mine do to. I'm sending the whole unit out to have bearings/seals installed. I'm not skilled enough or have the proper tools to do this myself. VBP does it for you for $200 an axel...and they are blueprinted to GM specs!!
