Plugs are fine. Hotter plugs will cause pinging and not solve anything unless you are driving at slow speed in ftraffic all the time. Mine (current AC replacement of stock plug) are light tan with no deposits.

you could run a pair of high flow cats. you can get ones with 3in inlets and outlets (or 2.5in or 2in). i could fit two in the same area as the stock one was orginally

i would think a pair wouldn't retard the performance much if at all

I just had some cats taken off, which were thoguht to be @ the time less restrictive, but once my new engine came together, the cats were a major bog on performance...it's an 80, 25 years, no more emissions inspections!

Did you have it tuned before or after yoiu removed the cats??

If before, and maybe even if after, you prolly need to advance the static timing, and reduce the mechanical advance.

It might also still be running rich at idle, so a idle circuit tweek might not be a bad idea.
