It seems that ever since I had my cats removed I can smell my exhaust any time I come to a complete stop. i know the stench will naturally be higher w/ no cats, but the fumes are starting to get to me. When I'm moving, I never smell anything, but at a light, I start to get a headache from the stench...any suggestions?
My neighbors use to make fun of me and act like they were all choking when I would start my vette and let it idle. The smoke and the smell were terrible. To this day I still always smell like my car exhaust when ever I drive it. I had the car tuned on a dyno which got rid of most of the smoke but not the smell. My wife hates it
Brand new Holley 670 carb, just had it dynoed/timed everything in perfect...it runs beautifully, as a matter of fact I beat an 03 or 04 Z06 2 days ago from 0 to about 65! But every once in a while my car does smoke a bit on startup, so I'll see if there isn't any more tuning I can do to her...thx
My car does the exact same thing. It isnt that bad at lights but when I get out of the car I smell like exhaust and I hate it. I have brand new carb and had it tuned so I guess our cars just smell?
Your getting enough gas to run high speeds, but at low speeds, it just won't burn it all. Have the Holley 670 as well, but the car is not in shape for driving high speeds right now(and won't be for a long time), see no sense in wasting fuel all the time. I'm thinking of getting a quadrajet.
Is there not a way to tune it down as to not waste as much gas? I have a performance engine in my car, and I knew my gas mileage would drop accordingly, but it has been terrible lately...

Stench comes from the trash. Our cars do not have "stench" and do not "smell." At least mine doesn't.
What we have is the "aroma" or fragrance of a vintage vehicle. It's all part of the package. Enjoy it while you can, in Ca. the smog ****'s are after us.
i have a Q-Jet and it does the same thing. my clothes smell like exhaust any time i work around the car when its running. only car i ever had that did it.
I believe there is a way. My dad explained it to me once, but I don't think I have enough experience to do this on my own. Maybe another CF'er knows. I'll ask my dad again tomorrow and get back to you on that if it hasn't been posted by someone else yet. I don't really mind the smell. after you've spent some time with the car, it's like the smell of a loved ones perfume that lingers around, it reminds you of them

I prefer the aroma of stale beer and cheap perfume myself.
I agree to a certain extent...I don't mind the smell of a lil bit of gas, I kinda like it. It does give the car a bit of character, but this is more than a little gas...it's a gas & exhaust mix, or "stank of the ages" if you will. I have checked for leaks and have found none...once I start to get a headache from the stench, something has got to give...
IMO, and it's NOT HUMBLE, the stench is part of a EPA driven type thing against the autos....and all that chemical crap about gasoline formulas is just that....crap....
put the lead back in gas, and forget all this stuff of the last 35 years or so....
and the smell goes down.....
in other words, the first solution WAS the best....

Mine smells the same way, so did my SBC in the boat I used to have.
A guy I work with says it smells like all his friends cars did in HS, which would be early 70's, late 60's cars. Maybe a tuner will chime in, but I think that's the hydrocarbons that smell.
I suspect the power piston in my Q-jet isn't seating all the way at idle, hence a slightly rich mixture and the smell.
Can't wait to see what the Holley does on the 383. Probably stinks even worse. But I'll be able to get away from it more quickly.

Right-ON.... (Assuming that your car is not running rick and/or smoking black.) The anti-knock additives used to replace the lead actually are removed or transformed by the catalytic converter. My 69 used to smell terrible until.... I started adding Max Lead 2000.. blend for 100 octane. Now no odors, 20 deg. cooler, 5 mpg better. FYI it takes .3 GRAM of lead per gal of 93 to get 100 octane.

My car doesn't stink that bad but I have been asked by my wife "You've been driving the Vette" or "You took the Vette to the store didn't you?" I always thought that she saw me in the driveway or something. One day I asked her how she knew and she said she smelled me.
I like the smell myself and can't smell it while driving, even at a stoplight. There is an additive that you see in Summit and other parts catalogs that scent your exhaust. I think there are about 10 different scents.....like purple passion!!! Kinda Rice IMO.
Larry - How many bottles do you use per tank full? Whats your "formula"? I like the 100 octane solution.
They have a web site. Use (Max lead 2000).. It comes in 28 .oz bottle that they call a quart for some strange reason. Anyway I use 9-10 oz for 15 gals. So I get three fill up per bottle. 15 gal is good point for me to get gas so I can keep the ratio consistant but you can do it however you want. Each bottle cost $8 so ... less than $3 per tank. I buy it by the case.
