Need help I just purchased a new ignition tumbler from Ecklers and now when i go to shut the car off the tumbler does not go all the way to the off position to take the key out. The ignition switch on the colum is in working order, along with the tumbler. It seems to be in the colum where the rod goes to the switch has anyone had this problem or know how to fix it. Thanks.
Hey!.............Don't talk about my Pawl that way, it's very well adjusted!
Oh ...By the way, What the Frell is a Pawl/
Could have something to do with the reverse lock out?
From: At my Bar drinking and wrenching in Lafayette Colorado
Check the adjustment of the reverse lockout (if it's a 4-speed) and the adjustment of the park lockout of it's an automatic. Also check adjustment of the ignition switch (the ignition switch is located on top of the steering column up above the brake pedal - connected to the tumbler with a rod).
I changed the key because when i got the car I was only given one key and that was just the ignition. I did not trust the guy I got it from so i went and order the ecklers kit with ignition and door locks.
you adjust it at the trans. . check the steering column under the hood where it comes out of firewall. there will be a lever that comes out of it and a cable that runs to the trans. try to move the lever up with your hand and then try switch. i think up is the lock position. what year is the car? i don't know if newer cars have a release lever on the column near the switch. the older vettes don't .
Regardless if you have an automatic or a manual transmission, on a 1975 Vette there should be a cable coming from the transmission to the lever on the lower end of the steering column. That lever should be pushed all the way to the UP position when the automatic transmission is in PARK or the manual transmission is in REVERSE. Some people just disconnect the cable and wire the lower lever permanently in the UP position.
Everything you ever wanted to know about the steering column/transmission shift interlock system is contained in this paper:
Okay I have tried moving the lever from the transmisson to the column and I have tried jiggling the column and moving the shifter from park to first and the key will still not turn to the off position to remove it. I think it is in the column but not for sure.
I am sorry, but Pawl has a tendency to be mal-adjusted or just plain broke.
The pawl is the link between the cylinder and the rod that operates the switch. It has a rack of gears that react to the switch. You may have to consult a manual.
The backdrive cable attachment at the column lever is held in place with a cotter pin. Remove the pin and detach the cable from the lever. Now place the column lever all the way UP. Can you remove the key now?
If you can, you might be able to adjust the cable to get your column to operate correctly.
Please refer to the steering column installation picture that was part of the suggested download paper.
The only adjustment of the backdrive cable is by loosening the two Nuts (R) inside the passenger compartment. Now you should be able to move Plate (M) which holds the backdrive cable sheath. You should be able to obtain a small adjustment of the cable length from the sheath to the lower lever.

We shouldn't be hijacking this posting even though your problem is similar but not the same. Please start a new posting and I will be happy to help you. BTW, in your posting let me know if you have a standard (non-adjustable) column or a T&T.
