Has anyone out there put truck heads on a 454 with good results for a fast street machine with big torque.
Chevy big block heads are basically rectangular port (hi perf), oval port (standard low perf) and small oval (truck).
Supposedly the oval ports are good to 6500 rpm's while the truck heads are so limited in port size that 5000 is about it.
But maybe a combination like this could have great throttle response and gobs of torque allowing for a lower rear axle ratio and better highway cruising with a four speed without od. And cheap !
The key to this question is STREET..........I know that for serious power and drag racing this is NOT it.
Depends on what "truck" heads you are talking about. the 366 heads flow about as much as a sbc. The 427 heads are the same as some pass models. All depends on what you get. If they are cheap, most likely they are crap. You get what you pay for.
The ovals are not considered "low perf." & many prefer them to the rect. for perf. The truck small "peanut" port heads are normally not used for perf. The Olds big block head is said to be about 170-180 cc. The peanut port heads are said to be about 220 cc & good to about 5000-5500.
You are correct that they could be used for TQ & some have used them. Good app. for them would be w/ a stock auto. & high (low numerically) rear gears.
PS Both Edelbrock & Weiand make intakes for those heads.
