Default The wheel & tire question again

I tried a search for 17" wheels and came up empty. I know this has been discussed before but I can't remember the answer
If I replaced the 15" wheels on my 1976 Corvette with 17" wheels what is the best combinition of wheel width and tire size that will simply bolt right on.
thanks

17x8 with 4" backspace. No adapters or spacers. Make sure the rims clear the calipers.

Width and diameter are actually less important than clearing the calipers... Once you get a wheel that has enough clearance to fit around the calipers, you have a fair amount of flexibility. I'd say the most popular size in 17" a 17x8 wheel wearing 255/50 or 255/45 tires. Those sizes with a 4" backspace fit inside the wheel wells and clear the parking brake bracket. Any bigger and you start having clearance issues.

The 255 50 17s are rubbing slightly on mine in the front no problems in the rear. I am going to go with 255 45 17s all around.
