I need a speedo sensor for my new autometer mechanical guage.Since i have tpi i have an electronic speedo sensor in the 700 now. What i need to know will this autometer sending unit work with my 87 tpi setup.I know there 2 000 pulse and 4000 pulse but the autometer list theres as 16,000.I have the stock mechanical drive to put back in the tranny, but i need this adapter so i can the mechanical and electronic too.Painless has one for $93.00 and autometer is $65.
I dont know anything about the autometer stuff, but here is what I did on my 66. I needed a mechanical drive on the speedo and needed an enectrical signal for the computer. I used the mechanical drive on the transmission and feed that into a mid 70s cruise control unit and on to the speedometer. I mounted a diode type sensor from an 85 Celebrity on the cruise unit to signal the compter. Works like a charm, cost nothing.
Thats fine my problem is i dont have any mechanical at all on the tranny just electronic going to my buffer to the computer.I guess ill call speed and performance and just buyit from them .
Why not get the VSS from a C4 vette and drop that in? You'd have to change out the drive & driven gear but that's relativly easy. I don't know about your autometer gauge but mine has a function to set the speedo to calibrate itself, as in drive a certain stretch and then the speedo will calibrate itself.
Ok i have an electronic vss in my tranny now hooked to my computer and i have a mechanical autometer speedo.I need to know if i can use the autometer sending unit for my 87 tpi. 85-89 is one and 90-92 is another.
Oh, a mech autometer gauge. I would ask autometer what the pulse per mile count is on their sending unit and check it against the GM one, if it fails I think painless sells a VSS to use on a mech drive cable.
