due to michigan weather and the fact that my garage is a 2 and a half size and my vette is cold, i need a heater... i remember a post and people sharing what they use and recommend. i have a kerosene torpedo heater and i can't take it anymore..... fumes are getting to me... how much does an electric one cost and does it run off a 110 or 220? just curious.....
I'm checking out the duct work in my new house to see if an outlet can be added to my garage. It would be nice to have heat in the winter and cold air in the summer!
Modine Hot Dawg 75000 btu keeps my 3 car nice and toasty. Not a big increase in my gas bill. Plumbed gas into the garage hooked up power and a thermostat.
The small electric construction heaters( ~5000Watts) will not keep you garage warm.... it will only take the chill off.
after screwing around with some ideas I plumbed in directly to my furnace. With the vent completely closed it maintains the temp at around 45 deg.... moves up to around 55 within an hour of openning up the vent. The only fear I have is fumes getting back into the house.... which I am currently working through.
I just finished insulating and drywalling the walls and ceiling in my garage. I've been keeping the garage at 55 degrees. Tonight I turned the heat up (it's currently 28 degrees outside) temp in the garage is now 68 degrees and I just finished washing my wifes car. Yes I have a drain in the garage.
I have a finished 2 car garage and I can keep it 70* in 15* weather with this heater, but it runs alot. Maybe a little under size for a bigger or unfinished garage. http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/pro...760791&ccitem=

I bought a propane heater, runs off you BBQ tank and has a electric fan, says 55,000BTU and will heat 1200sq/ft you have to crack the garage door for ventilation, I am going to try it out this weekend

Keep us posted. I'm running a 19,000BTU kerosene heater and gets the temp to about 40 when it's 20 outside.
red and greg...thats a nice heater ......i'll just have to see if i can pull a 220 line from my house to the garage and make a small circuit panel.... hopefully santa will let me use one for a minute or two..
I use two kerosene heaters, 23,000 Btu each, Use both to heat the 2-1/2 car garage up in about a hour and then run one. Today the AM temp was in the mid 20's and high was in the mid 40's. Worked on my truck in a tee shirt after lunch.

Len i'm running the same one as you and a kerosene torpedo heater to get the air temp up rapidly...the torpedo htr smells, is too hot and is loud for all the time...but it does a great job immediately heating up the air. i figure i have the worst case scenario 24 x 34 detached concrete block...i started at 9pm tonight 20* outside just above freezing in garage and i just came in and it was 60* in the garage...i also use a small 8" round fan inside of 8" round duct work that is open at the top which is at cieling height and then open at bottom to recirculate my hot air fromthe top of the cieling (plastic sheeting) to ground level this is the real ticket to heat ...getting the hot air down to grnd level....
i think i'm gonna block off above the rafters with some drywall sheets or plastic..... i have a tall garage and could prolly make a mini office in the rafters.......
Here's a pic of my garage heater. It's a Lennox Hotshot 45,000 btu natural gas fired heater. It brings the garage up to temp in a matter of minutes. Thermostat control keeps it nice and toasty all winter long.
I purchased a old oil heater 1960 from a oil company for $50. I then used a 45 gallon drum for oil which I fill via a 5 gallon can. Burn 25 gallons a year heating whenever I want. Works excellent. Only drawback is that it takes up floorspace. I have herd a furnace from a mobile home (Wall mount) works excellent. My $0.02
