I need to replace the fuel line that runs from the pump to the carb. My tank is almost full. Should I empty the tank first? I wouldn't think so but I thought I should ask. Can't be too carefull when working with gas.

yes or clamp the flexible hose line from frame rail to fuel pump....if you do this you risk the chance of ruining that hose....however you could drive all the gas out of your car so you have very little remaining and drain it....it will pour out other wise due to siphon action....
No, the return line dumps above the tank fluid level. If you pinch off the feed there should be no fuel coming through (from pump side), the return line can't siphon from the tank
I can't remember what I did... can't recall if the tank was near empty or what. I think it helps to have the front wheels up on ramps. Of course no matter what you do with the fuel line from the pump to the tank you are still going to have gas in the line from the pump to the carb, so have a towel ready - there will be some gas coming out when you disconnect the line from the fuel pump.

They have a regular fuel line clamp that won't even mar the fuel hose---HOWEVER, as long as you are replacing the line, the "S-Hose" should be replaced as well--a very cheap item--when I changed out fuel pumps this Spring I used a fuel hose clamp back by the tank and raised the front end to balance out for the fuel tanks in our Vettes being as high as they are.
You can use small utility clamps (spring loaded) from Home Depot, they have the rubber ends that are orange color. You can clamp off the rubber line by the tank and the rubber "s" line that connects to your pump. You'll get some fuel from the line at first from the carb, after that you'll be fine to install a new line.

now your talking.... i forgot to use all my gas before i pulled the engine and the hose to the pump is clamped off right now and i have been thinking about now i am going to do a quick swap of the line this is my plan.....clamp line at back of car as best as i can....put new line on fuel pump with hose clamps loose...and then pull the old line with gas in it off and as quickly as i can slide on the new one ....i think i'm gonna get smelly...

tried the bucket previously when i disconnected it.....it didn't work...... gas was squirting in all directions running down lower control arms...what a mess.... tomorrow it will be newspapers ......
Drive the car up on ramps or jack it up and use good jackstands. Petrol is just a liquid and liquids don't flow uphill. Well not Down Under anyway!!!LOL. Of course you will spill the small amount that's in the line when you loosen the fittings, but that should be all if you've got the front of the car up high enough. Good luck.
