Help! I purchased my 79 a few months back and when I turn left or right I hear this groaning noise from the back end of the car. The previous owner had the differential rebuilt. I know the leaf spring is shot and am going to replace that but any other ideas? It is like a low mmmwwwhaaa type noise which quits after the turn is done.
Could be the trailing arms and bushings as well, but I'd guess that it's the rear leaf spring. The 79 should have steel leaf springs unless it has been replaced and these can get noisy if they corode between te leaves.
It's your posi.
I had the same thing before I put a Ford 9" back there.
The sound will get worse to. It will sound like the rear end is tearing itself to bits.
What fixed mine was a small bottle of GM posi additive.
The previous owner probably didn't put in enough in when he rebuilt the diff.
Try it. It's a cheap fix.

It never hurts to add the posi additive, but they usually make a clunking sound when it needs to be added. Best way to check is to do slow figure 8s in a parking lot. If you don't hear anything it is ok; if you hear the diff making noises change the fluid and additive or just add additive. It is probably the spring making those groans.
