Default New or reconditioned side yokes?

Are the reconditioned side yokes ok for a differential rebuild or should I go with new? I need the HD ones with the caps and bolts for the u-joint. The new ones are almost twice as expensive. One vendor has a lifetime warranty on the remanufactured ones.

I have RECO ones. I think the way they are remanufactured they will handle a lot of punishment.

I had some new ones and they were too short. The RECO is done in Texas, the new ones I think are built overseas. There can be up to 0.030" difference in the length. I measured 4 RECO ones and found that there was up to 0.015" variation between four that I had. To determine what length you need stick some feeler gauges in between the end of the yoke and the centre pin (in the posi unit. Record the space on both left and right yokes. Remove the yokes. Measure the length of the yoke from the top of the clip cut to the button top. Add the thickness of the feeler gauge less 0.003-0.004". This is the length you want. The Chevy Performance Manual reccomends 0.005" gap between the end of the pins and the centre pin. Make sure you do teh measure ments with a new centre pin installed ($11 at you local chevy dealer) as they wear from the yokes rubbing on them.

Another easy test is to pull in and out on the yoke. If it "clunks" then it has at least 0.015" of end play.

Van Steel sells the RECO yokes.

Cheers,

Pete

looks like a no brainer to me. The reman ones have a hardened button machined into the end. The new ones have the whole end hardened by heating.

Remanufactured are better... When the new ones are heat treated only about .020-.030" gets hardened so when the hard shell wears away the rest wears very fast.. With a hardened button the whole area inboard of the snap ring is very hard so long term life span is better.

Scroll Down to SG-36. Thats where they start. I don't have a catalog here at home so I don't know the catalog page number. If you look under the same catagory as the web site, in the catalog you'll find them. It's under Spring(Rear Cover).
