I am hoping to purchase the power steering components for my 70 vette over the winter to be installed in the spring. Anyone tell me if a back yard mechanic can do this or should I leave this to a full time qualified mechanic.
It is pretty much bolt-on, except that you need to change the
pitman arm at the steering box output. That will be your greatest
challenge.
You need the right (pitman arm remover) tool.
You will also need either a pickle fork or a tie-rod end remover
to get the steering linkage off.
You should be able to get the alignment close, then drive to a shop for final alignment.
and if your steering arms don't have an extra hole you need to swap them or drill a new hole and buy a 100$ reamer to get the proper angle....so 2 new arms are probably cheaper.
and bought the kit. Forgot where.
But if I were to do it nowadays I'd compare the price between the Power Steering kits and the Rack-and-Pinion conversion.....just something to consider.
One way you have a modern steering system and the other way you have more or less the old original system but with power steering.
By the way, it was fairly easy to add the power steering and the car is much more pleasant to drive.
if you're "just" talking about the power steering components (cylinder, control valve, pump, hoses), it's a pretty easy job. good weekend project. if your talking about tie rods and other front end parts that's a different story
