I am the third owner of my vette and I would like to contact the first owner. Can the vin# help me find out who the original owner was? The guy I bought the car from told me he lost touch with him. He also said the car was sold new in NJ and it has only been registered here.Any info would help.

I tracked down the original owner of my 78 by using the internet and "Bigfoot" to track down the owner. Shocked his wife.
You can also request vehicle registration (title) searches from your state DMV but these are manual as they have to dig through old records and it costs a few bucks. What's neat is learning the mileage when the car exchanged hands. The downside is once the car leaves the state...you lose some history.
Many states will not give out any info except to police and the like. Some states keep record a long time but some get rid on the record after a couple of years. I don't know about NJ. Good luck.
The new "privacy laws" make it extremely difficult. Most DMV's only keep records for 10 years. Your best bet is to track down previous owners yourself. Chuck
