I am going to look at a 78 Corvette on Tuesday, and I need your help.
For the past 20 years I have owned a 79, 86, 64, and 99 (in that order). They all had their particular problems and I was in hope that you could tell me what has been the typical problem areas for a 1978. The car has 45,000 orignal miles and is a L48 4-speed. The owner has a well documented history of all repairs done on the car. He has sent me pictures and the car really looks good. He is the second owner of the car and has had it since 1979. He said it was 10 months old when he got it and it has never been hit or had any body repairs made on the car.
I plan on taking a floor jack and get under the car and do the hammer test on the frame what else should I look for, other that the obvious.
I ask the same question and his answer seemed reasonable....He wants a new one and his wife won't let him have 2 of them. Thanks for the response guys.
Keith, all I can say is check it good for rust. Everything else can be fixed a lot easier. Of course I'm sure you know about the areas that are affected with your history of cars owned. I don't know of any unique problems that 78's had.
Thanks Big Fish
I am aware of the rusty frame issues and will check it out carefully. I guess the 78 is pretty much a solid car. You know any time it is the first year of a new design there are typically some problems associated with that year model only, and they seem to get them squared away by the next year.
I feel confident if there were major problems with this particular year I would have got many more responses.
