I rebuild my rear suspension a couple of months ago and replaced all the u-joints. I recently read that the drive shaft was balanced with the yoke. I did not mark on which side or orientation the yoke was. Does this mean that it will have to be rebalanced? Does it make any difference in what orentation/rotation of the drive shaft is to the rear? How could I possibly have it balanced with the rear?
The half shafts do not have weights were they balanced and does the orientation of them make any difference.
Why would GM balance an assembly and not put perminate aligen marks for assembly/reassembly?

can't answer you questions on the half shafts although balancing any thing that spins would make sense to me....it was my drive shaft that was balanced with the yoke attached (after having it shortened)...the shop painted a mark on the drive shaft and the yoke to align them...but they also stamped the drive shaft and yoke to mark the alignment spots....get a flash light and crawl under there and look for little stampings by one of the u joint recesses....and then look at the yoke for a corresponding mark....
Sinse your shaft does not have any balance weights welded to it, it must have been good after production as is.
That's possibly why it doesn't matter, how it's orientated now.
If you can't feel any " unusual " vibrations during driving , don't worry.
Halfshafts do not turn at such high speed as the drive shaft, may be that's why they are not balanced ?
My drive shaft has weights. I sand blaster the shaft and yoke and painted before installing new u-joints. I did not see any marks? I cantt drive it yet, working on brakes and waiting for spring. I guess I will have to wait and see if I have a problem ane then dry different orentations or have it rebalanced.

the marks will be small....maybe even just "punches" with a chisel....i guess if you have no vibration its ok, if you a vibration just flip it 180* and see if it gets better....
