I want to replace the bracket that mounts to the door, but the Phillips screw heads are totally stripped out.

Are there nuts on the inside? Are they accessible?

Last resort is to drill the screws out, unless there are any other suggestions.

How the aftermarket ones are installed is you have 2 3/8th inch holes and you install rubber inserts. They just push into the 3/8th holes. The center of the rubber has a metal insert that the screw threads into.
You can buy new inserts so if you destroy the old ones the new ones will just slip into the existing holes.

That's exactly how mine works on a '75. My inserts were worn out so they made the bracket loose so the mirror was loose. The new ones really did the trick.

but how do i extract the current screws? i assume the heads are stripped because the screws are seized into the door.

looking at my AIM, it appears there is a threaded plate behind the door skin. if I drill/grind off the screw heads, will the plate fall away? or is it bonded to the door?

what size are the clearance holes in the door skin? do I have to drill them out to 3/8 to work with the new rubber inserts.

My 69 mirror mounting plate is riveted to the door skin but some later years my be bonded. You might try a screw extractor to remove the seized screws. I bought one at Lowes that had a burnishing tool on one end and the extractor at the other. You could also drill the screws out to 3/8th holes to mount the mirror. You could also drill two new mounting holes anywhere on the mounting plate, just be sure the mirror base will cover them. The plate will not fall off. I don't think the aftermarket mirror with the rubber plug requires a backing plate, but don't get it caught on anything if mounted that way.

You hit on today's project. I started to drill out the old rusted screws. Everything is rusted together. I'm going to get the inserts. I didn't know that they were rubber that expands to fill the hole? I don't know if there is enough surface on the sides for the rubber to stick to. I was going to epoxy them in. I will keep you posted.
