I got the two sizes I use for the diff plug and the trans plug. at a commercial tool supply house. They are worth tracking down. you'll never round off the corners with those.
Sometimes you need to use a breaker bar... With a square socket you can only get 4 positions. With the 8 point you will have more choices in a confined area. Sometimes a little more room is all you need. We've all been there. It's a trade off but I have never had problems with an eight point. ANYTHING is better than pipe wrenches and vise grips. Save the vice grips for broken bolts and such.

its like the difference between 12 pt and 6pt sometimes the angles don't workout and you need the added flexibility of the extra set of points...the SK set i have (3/8 down) is 4 points and the craftsman/powrkraft ones i have (3/8 up) are 8 point....
and to make matters worse when i had one plug (female) that was enlarged i had to take a 3/8 hex head socket and grind it down....no way was i going to grind down my expensive ones....
