Default carb question

I'm looking to upgrade my carb - unfortunately, I want to keep the stock hood, so my intake choices are limited to, well zero.

Since I need to keep the intake, I was looking to stay with the spreadbore, which severly limits my choices. I was looking at an older 4165, 800 CFM double pumper. Would this be too much / could I tune it to work?

I got the orignal 427 with a Crane Energizer Dur 272/272, Lift 515/515. Headers are eventually on their way. I got the car with a pidly holley 650, vacuum secondaries.

Thanks!

Get a New Q-jet replacement from Edelbrock. DO NOT buy a rebuilt Q-jet from Holley. They destroy the performance of the carb... Conflict of interest? I'd put money on it.

Edlebrock doesn't make any spread bore in the 700-795 range (at least according to summit. Am I wrong?

http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive/index.html

The 1903, 1904, and 1906 are all 795 cfm. The 1910 is 850 cfm.

I have run two different Holley double pumpers using the stock hood and Edelbrock manifolds.

A Torker (original or II) will clear if used with a modified (to clear the secondary accellerator pump mechanism) '70 LT-1 air cleaner.

I currently run a Edelbrock Victor Jr. using the same modified air cleaner, by milling a 1/2" off the carb flange.

In each case I have about 3/8" hood clearance.

Currently, I use a Holley heat shield (PN 108-70) to reduce percolation problems. If you were willing to skip the heat shield, you could avoid milling the manifold carb flange.
