hello all, i have a question about my rochester carb. it sits on a soon to be restored 78 pace car, and im wondering if all rochester carbs had an auto choke. im askin this cuz i have to spray starting fluid in the carb to start it when cold . thanks chris
As far as I know all Rochester Quadrajets had automatic choke systems. Most later ones 68 or so and up, were controled with a bimetallic coil on the manifold. It sounds like yours is out of adjustment or has been bypassed.
They were all automatic but some had Electronic chokes while others had Hot air chokes. You can find that somewhere on the internet because I don't know offhand what Year carb had what choke.
The thing I know is that my 81 is the only year that has a computer controlling the carburetor just to make repairs and modifications 800 times more difficult.
Three years ago or so I saw a '69 Camaro with a NOM that had a manual choke on a Q-jet. I don't know if this was an after market deal but it sure looked stock to me. The engine was a '67 283. The kid had baught the car that way. Great body on it.
About a year later the kid was hit head on when a woman in a Suburban crossed the center line. What a shame.

Check out www.TOCMP.com, they have a great Q-jet service manual which can be viewed on-line. Lots of good information on these carbs there.
