Default Temporary answer for luggage rack holes?

I decided to remove the hideous luggage rack off my '68 convertible today. I know the permanent filling procedure for fillingh the holes but that's only gonna help me when I paint the car. That's a few years off since the factory paint still shines up pretty well. I'm looking for something that will hold me over for that time period. I'm thinking some sort of snap-in button or a xmas-tree connector like the use in interiors of new cars. The holes are pretty big though. Close to 1/2".

Has anybody had any luck with this?

What your looking for may be good if you can find the right size. I just put my bolts through the holes with the chrome spacers/rubber grommet still on them..looks better than the holes sitting out in the open.

They make a rubber plug that snaps in the body. Had an ex police car that had these plugs in the trunk where antenas used to be.

What I did with mine was, I put clear silicone into the holes in the rubber grommets.

Willrace:

You know... I posted my question and went outside to finish up buffing the car. Just before I came in, I went over to the pile of parts and thought, 'gee... I wonder if I could use the chrome washers...'. Then I came inside and read your post. Great minds I guess....

The washers are a bit big and ostentatious, but my car is white like yours and there's some discoloration around the holes from 36 years of rust. The washers cover it completely. I'm gonna spend tomorrow cleaning up the washers and picking up some new, shorter SS screws. I'll posty a pic when I'm done.

Thanks all!

IMHO, I would have left the hideous rack on until I was ready to paint rather than have hideous plugged holes all over the rear deck.

I took off the washers and put chrome button head screws in the holes. They don't look bad. Joe

I agree...I hate the rack on my car too. I'll let a professional fix it properly at the right time.

Joe73:

That looks pretty nice. Where did you get the buttonheads big enough to cover the big holes? Also, I assume you had nuts or something on the bottom to hold 'em. Am I right?

I left the original rubber wellnuts in the holes, the screws are the same size as the original rack screws, only 1" long. I got them at a Harley dealer. Joe

They sell the flat body/interior plugs at Pep Boys that would snap in, and you could use touch up paint to color the top......

You can get push in plugs at Home Depot, Lowes, probably any of the big box home improvement stores --- they come in chrome (which I've used for a winter - with only minor rust) or black plastic. I painted over a couple of the black plastic ones on my '72 Blazer --

I've never seen the hole fixed so you could not see them. They always come back to haunt you as the paint job ages. I've seen otherwise prefect paint jobs marred by the reminants of repairs of these holes. UGH! tough job....
