Default problem with temp gauge-help??

the gauge is on a 74 with 350, new temp sender didn't fix. It goes to 240* or so and stays, does not puke water, temp gauge in radiator neck checks out at 180* or so. Is this a wiring problem or what. It used to stay on the low side at far left before then swapped to full hot tilt to right, help please with ideas. Is it the gauge or what. Thanks.

Does the gague move at all? Found in my 79 when the gague didn't move, that Bubba had pulled out the gague cluster and when he put it back in the top strand of the circuit "board" broke. Ended out tracing the path of the strand and running a jumper wire between the two gague terminals in the back when the strand would have gone. Works like a charm now.

If the gauge is pegged to hot side there is a good chance the wiring is shorted to ground someplace between the gauge and the sender. I would start at the sender and disconnect the wire. If the gauge drops to the cold side, the sender is no good (yes, even new ones fail). If no change, then start tracing back to the gauge. Hope you have a schematic, it will help a little. Getting the right sender is important as well. Most aftermarket ones are not correctly calibrated for our C3's.
