Dumping before the half shafts is going to be very loud. Why do you want to do this?

Might look into some car chemistry header inserts. These go into the collector. Then use some dynomax bullets. Even so it is not going to muffle much. Invest in some earplugs.

I have the Dynatech Vortex header cones and a pair of 3" in/out dynomax race bullets (the shortest ones, I think they're 16"), the Race Bullets alone were very noisy so I installed the header inserts hoping to bring the noise down somewhat but all it did was take off the sharp pitch, the earth shaking rumble is still there...enough to trip off every car alarm in the street, I would not want to sit in a car w/ just the header inserts, instant hearing damage if you ask me.

Whatever you do... Radioshack sells a Sound meter (Decibel meter... forgetting technical name!)

Good for checking to see how loud you are inside the cabin. 87db is hearing damage... over time anyway.

Maybe one of the saftey standard pages (OSHA or somebody...) might have a better guide. Better safe than sorry when it comes to your hearing!

Also be aware that a your putting yourself at risk for carbon monoxide poisoning. "Most" try to either get the exhaust out from under the car, either out the side far enough that your not sooting up your floorboards, or out the back a couple inches.

Dumping before the axle is neither a good idea nor necessary - there's enough room to get the pipes all the way to the rear or a side-exit setup... ground clearance shouldn't be an issue.... the bullets are way too loud, they're a very good 'add on' if your mufflers are too loud but only the bullets without mufflers ???
For the track, why not - on the road, no no....... the fumes will kill you....

Bullets are nothing more than a small body diameter glasspack - good for about 2 dBA noise reduction. You dump ANYTHING under the car halfway, & it's going to be LOUD. Any kind of header collector insert will cause unwanted restriction.

For quiet, you either increase the muffler length, increase exhaust restriction, or use smaller pipe & muffler flowpath. If you are running cat converts, they will act as resonators.

i'm trying to keep the exhaust clean and i have a good amount of chrome and paint in the rear and the last thing i want is to have some exhaust pipes go through there........ unless i can do it clean..... i was gonna dump them on the sides but wasn't really keen on that.....

If you want a clean apperance and don't mind a few bucks, go with a custom made T-304 stainless system. Ask around and you should be able to find a shop that specializes in street rod work that can do it. You can have it made in mandrel for better flow. Finish it off with some high quality stainless mufflers like Borla and it will be pretty for eternity.
