Would it work to take a compression test with the carb removed? I would guess it was, but wanted to find out for sure. I figure it's the same as holding the throttle open? Will I get accurate results using this method? Want to do it tonight if possible.
i've been told the "best" way to take a compression test is when the engine has been warmed up to operating temperature. be hard to do that your way, unless you run it and then take the carb off.
I know about having the engine warm...but the headers make that almost impossible...unless I want burnt hands.
I pulled my carb getting ready to do some engine detailing. I thought since I was pulling the top apart I would do a quick compression test to see where the engine is at...seems to have dropped power and started using oil just before putting it away for the winter.
If you rotate the crank so that the cylinder you are testing is at TDC then the valves are closed and it does not matter if the carb or even the intake manifold is there. Remove all the spark plugs first so it's easy to crank, you won't have to fight the compression. Some guys just crank the engine with the starter and watch the compression guage for the highest reading. If you do this then remove the coil wire so you don't get any spark at the plugs.
