muffler, muffler, that is the question??
Ok,, I know this subject has been beaten to death about a thousand times,, and lord knows how many times I've been through the old posts, but its a tuff dicision and I hope some one can guide me to a reasonable solution. I want to install a good performance muffler(s), I have headers, and want to open up the piping to 2 1/2 inchs. obviously I want a nice rumbling car,, what scares me is the interior noise levels. People on the forum say that flowmaster 40s are to noisy, some don't,, what about 50s ?? Are dynomax's comparable for performance, and still give me the rumble?? what would be a good compromise ?? I know its all a personal choice, but any experience would be welcome, good or bad.
I picked up a set of 2 1/2" pipes at Carlisle from Allens Exhaust for my 68 convertible. These are 2 one-piece pipes from the crossmember back and 2 head pipes (I still have stock manifolds). The intermediate pipes and mufflers are one-piece like stock.
They make 3 configurations:
- OEM
- Moderate
- Loud (High Flow)
I bought the Loud ones.
Allens claims they remove one baffle for the moderate mufflers, and two baffles for the loud mufflers. They claim this is very similar to Flowmaster.
What I like is that its an easy home installation. The pipes and hangars fit like stock. The mufflers even have the stock hangar mounts. That's nice. The installation tucks up nice and fits the exhaust bezels perfectly. It looks stock but has considerably more growl.
The sound is not overpowering but is definately louder and more aggressive than stock, especially when you open the throttle! There's no resonance so far as I can tell, and you can hold a conversation at cruise speed. I wish it was a tad deeper but I'm not complaining.
This probably isn't the optimum performance solution but I find its a good compromise that was cheaper than most aftermarket options, has outstanding quality control, and fits as good as stock.
I've always liked the sound of the old mustangs... nice and quiet almost like a boat. But when your romp on it, they tell you they have power... but its subtle.
Half way between that and the wail of a V12 Ferrari is what I'm shooting for!
