Default Cooling hose question - Please help!!! - PICS - Still need a little help

Hello everyone,

Based on some recommendations form various cooling experts on this forum, I was informed that I should not be using an expansion tank with my radiator. So, I removed the tank and I ran the hoses directly to the heater core, but I have a question about length:

Does the length of the hoses make a difference? I left the hoses very long, so I could keep them away from the header. (I held them back with the bracket that used to hold the expansion tank) Will it make a difference if the hoses were shorter? I could make them much shorter, but I only want to do that if it will improve the cooling capabilities. Otherwise, I think it would be wise to keep them away from the heat of the header.

What do you guys think? Keep them long and away from the header or shorten them?

I posted pics but I have to get them approved, as soon as I do I will put them in this post.

Thanks for your help,
Joe

the length of the hose is really not relevant to anything i can think of other then the obvious....too long gets in the way of things ...too short means it can't be properly fastened to fender well... i would make it the length it needed to be to make a nice presentation and to be secured to the fender well and not think twice about it...

I agree with Bob. Seeing your pictures though you could stand to shorten them a little. You can get the correct hose brackets to go on the fenderwell from Dr Rebuild or get some clamps at Lowes in either nylon or steel "cushion clamp" style.

I'm confused. I've heard of routing heater hoses to not allow fluid to the heater core and keep excess heat out of passanger compartment. But I haven't heard of advantages of routing around expansion tank. Could someone enlighten me on the pros and cons of this action?

Thanks.

I think he had an expansion tank and a filler on the radiator. You don't need both.

From what I heard, if you have a filler neck on your radiator, then you should not have an expansion tank. I switched my radiator from on without the filler neck to one with and Tom Dewitt, a member here who owns, DeWitt radiators, told me to ditch the expansion tank.

Thanks,
Joe

Did you replace the exp tank with a overflow/recovery tank? You need the outlet hose from the filler neck to go into recovery tank and be submerged or you will suck air into the system as it cools.

really?
I thought that cap only released fluid, not took it in? Is that right?
I was just going to run it to an overflow tank. Something real simple.
Any reccomendations on tanks that I can use that are cheap and nice looking?

Here is the radiator I installed.

Thanks,
Joe

Yes, you need a surge tank. The only one that fits correctly is a 73 that is not being reproduced. They pop upon Ebay at times. The 74 up don't sit flat on a 68-73 inner fender. You may just have to go to the junkyard and poke around for something that fits.

Not really sure how that site helps?

Anyone know if I can use the overflow container mentioned above?

Thanks,
Joe

Still need a little help!

Do I need some special type of surge tank or can I use a generic one, like the one above?
Thanks,
Joe

IN 68, THE BIG BLOCK DID NOT HAVE A TANK, WHILE THE SMALL BLOCK DID!!

If you don't use one, you can't fill up the system all the way because the coolant expands as it heats up. Simply leave a little out or fill it all the way and leave the cap off while you run the engine up to operating temp and catch the runoff in a bucket, then cap it once it cools back down. The tank simply holds that expanded coolant. Either is fine, but what's PROPER is in my first sentance.
