help - valve stem seals
Seal parts - Got Felpro SS5112 intake&exhaust valve stem seal kit (oring style, but actually squared off vice round) AND Felpro XX10058 valve stem seal kit (boot type - slides down valve stem - instructions say it will find it's proper seal place). I thought this latter is the umbrella type? Figure these two seals would do pretty well (without removing valves and machining for teflon seals). Maybe just supposed to use one of these two seals. And different part number for umbrella seal? Comments?
My 79 is L48 - auto. Would like to do without removing heads. Confused - if use dry air, the piston will push down, so cam will move and at least one valve will be open - spring under compression. Better to use the TDC for that cylinder and the rope trick?
Any good web details on this proceedure? Have searched the tech tips and archieves, good input but any great single site?
I use the compressed air method but the rope trick sounds like a good idea also. If you use air, the trick here is to give the keeper a good whack with a plastic mallett or hammer before you try to compress the spring to remove the keepers. The keepers get stuck to the valve and even with the cylinder full of air the valve will compress and the air will be released in most cases if you don't free it up some first.
I use a cheap vakve spring compressor (angle iron type) I got from Sears. I bent it more than the way it comes though to give leverage and room around the carb. Works fine for me. Their are much better tools out there though.
Biggest PITA of the hole thing is getting the air compressor fitting in the sparkplug hole (after getting the valves covers off that is).
If you remove all the spark plugs can you put a socket on the
crankshaft pulley and turn the engine to get each piston into TDC?
