I have a 79 camaro and just had a full engine rebuild. But for some reason when I go to put in reverse or drive, the car stalls out-unless I hold the gas pedal in a bit. Anybody have any ideas to what could be the problem? The car has sat awhile and not run that often--I figured it was just a simple problem...Would like to get someones opinion. The car is actually my aunts car and I'm going over to pick it up and bring it to my place, hopefully its not a major thing I couldn't fix while I'm over there to pick it up....please help me...thanx
check the easy stuff... Shoot a timing light at it, check carb idle speed adjustments, carb idle air adjustments, etc. Idle on that car should be 900-950rpm. Set timing to about 8 degrees btc(make sure you have the vacuum advance disonnected and line plugged), plug the advance back in and timing should advance to about 34 degrees when you rev it up to about 2500. I'd look at the timing first, mess with the carb a bit, and if you still can't get it right it might need to have the valves adjusted.
silly question, but I don't have access to a timing light, not do I know how to use one. Is there a different route? Also what is a valve adjustment?
You can probably rent a timimg light for free at AutoZone. Connect it to the No. 1 plug wire, point it at the crank pulley and see what the timing mark reads. If it is in spec, the problem lies elsewhere. If it is out of spec the timing needs to be adjusted.
No offense, but judgeing by the nature of your response regarding valve adjustment it seems that you might not have a great deal of experience in car repair. If that is the case, find a good mechanic and have him diagnose the problem. The biggest challenge is finding a good mechanic!
ok, I will do that, get a timing light from autozone. One more question, what is the #1 plug, that I plug the light into? Also I was wondering if the vacuum lines had anything to do with the problem--because my aunt just had someone rebuild the engine---could it possibly be a disconnected hose somewhere? I will have to look over the car when I get there. thanks for the help...John
