Default Do it yourself 4-spd rebuild?

Can the do it your'selfer rebuild a muncie 4 spd. I have done everything else mechanical on my car. Is it possible to rebuild a trannie at home without the need for special tools? Is this one of those things that should be left to a professional or is that a myth?

Thanks
Wade

Call Paul at www.5speeds.com and buy his Muncie video. He does a very good job of walking through a Muncie rebuild with home tools. I use a press but it's sure possible to get by without one. If you have rebuilt everything else on the car you can do the Muncie and save yourself $500 in labor. Paul sells the kits too that have all the common parts in them.

Well, I suppose it depends on how you define "special tools." A set of snap ring pliars, a press, and a set up shaft for the counter shaft roller bearings is about it.

The area where an expert comes in handy is knowing what needs to be replaced. An example of this would be the the sliders and engagement teeth on the gears or the shift lever cams and detents. If you don't know what a bad one looks like, you may be replacing the soft parts (blockers, bearings and such) and end up with a trans that's no better than when you started.

I just rebuilt mine last spring using the video for reference. The video is definitely worth the money. I bought snap ring pliers and the special wrench for the front nut and used a press at work however the video shows how to do without the wrench and press.

Default Tranny rebuild

Definitely agree to what gerry said...

One of the weak points of a muncie is the main bearing located in the soft aluminum case - if this big hole becomes out of round, throwing in a rebuild kit does not help a lot. Also the axial play of the main shaft and wear of teeth is something only an expert can judge.

Considering all the work for removal and installation, I would let an expert dismantle the tranny, judge all parts and do what needs to be done.

Regards,
Thomas

Doable, yes. Economicaly justifyable, probably not. At least you would know what is in there and how it all goes together.
