Alright, I pulled this up on the drivers side of the block by the distributor:

Isn't that the date number on the passenger side of the block that I took a picture of (the one that was behind the distributor) why would it say something like B 1 88, when clearly everything is pointing to it being something between a 68 and 77???

It reads "B 18 8", OR Feb 18, 1968(or possibly 1978 if that casting number #3970010 was still being used in '78(which I'm sure it was).

Heads are from '73, Block is probably from '78 as the "010" block was not in production in '68 or '88.

If you had pics of the engine suffix code stamping from the front passenger side block deck we could tell you more. If it has a 3 letter suffix, it is a '70's block. Generaly, If the suffix begins with a "T" it was probably originaly for a "truck" and probably has the 4 bolt mains. If the 3 digit suffix begins with a "C" it is probably a 2 bolt main "car" block unless it was for an L-82 Vette originaly.

This block looks to me to be a 4 bolt main but that is based on an obscure undocumented observation of the tapped boss on the top of the bellhousing mounting surface. Tapped top hole = 4 bolt main. This is not carved in stone anywhere but you are free to quote me during a bench minutia racing session any time.
