Back in the early 80s some radar detector manufacturers made systems that had the detector hidden under the bumper and the alarm unit under the dash. I'd say that you just found one of them.

C'mon guys, ONLY REAL '74 owners would know the answer to this so I forgive you guys. This actually is part of a crash sensor on an early experimental airbag system on a '74 test car. There was several articles on it in magazines-but you guys read only what's on the Internet now anyways.

That's a remote radar detector. The part under the bumper is the antenna and the controls are mounted under the dash.

i certainly hope it's not, though that might explain the condition its in....they musta sold the used crash test vehicles pretty cheap
