was the vette always able to beat the mustang 0-60? i mean the higher optioned hp vette and the same for the mustang? and if the mustang spanked the vette, what year or years did it beat the vette?
Remember, the Ford equivalent to the Corvette was the T-Bird till it got fat and slow.
The GM equivalent to the Mustang was the Camaro and Firebird. During the mid 70's, Firebirds with 455's were probably some of the fastest production cars out there.
As to the original question, who cares? It's a Mustang. It's like saying there are fast Hondas (there are, but once again, who cares?).
1995 was a pretty close year for the mustang and corvette.
According to http://www.ssmoparmuscle.com/speedcomp.htm
the Mustang Cobra R (only 250 built) ran 0-60mph in 5.2 seconds...so did the LT-1 corvette.
Oh yeah, '95 was the last year of the ZR-1....4.9 seconds = Corvette wins again !!
According to http://www.geocities.com/eskoufos/shelbyfaq.html
The 1965 GT350R fastback Mustang with a 289 4V making 350hp @ 5400
ran 0-60mph in 5.2 seconds (really?). What was the Corvette doing in 1965 ??
Carroll Shelby claims that the late 60s Mustangs wiped up the Vettes in showroom stock.
Any truth to this?
Maybe the Cobra 428 vs the Small block Vette but that was it. Growing up my dad bought a '68 Shelby GT500 vert black w/ gold stripes 428Cj and top loader 4spd. While it was a nice car it couldn't hold a candel to our '68 L71 vert 4spd. He sold it after a year, that was the first and lang Stang we owned.
I'm sure that there were years where 1 was faster and years for the other. Hard data to compile. You would have to consider all engines for both. There have been some darn fast Corvettes and some darn fast Mustangs over the years.
However; they are not direct competitors.
As said above, the Chevy direct competitor for the Mustang is the Camaro. Mustangs are commuters and most now days have a 6 cyl. In the 80's and 90's most had 4 cyls. You had to step up to GT's or Cobra's to get a V-8.
This is the same with the Camaro.
Fortunately, V-8's are the norm for Vettes.
I've owned both (Mustang and Vette). Loved both.
But, I don't consider them the same type of cars.
Ford never really has had a direct competitor for the Corvette since the 50's. (which I think is a shame because I think competition improves the breed)
Even now with the new Ford GT, it isn't a direct competitor for the Corvette.
