Default Fan Belt

On my 1974 454 I can't seem to keep a fan belt on between the harmonic balancer and water pump. It has a tensioner on the outside of the belt. I am thinking I am putting on the wrong style belt. Does anyone know the correct belt for this application? You should see the look on the kid's face behind the counter at NAPA when I ask for one. It doesn't show on any parts stores computer, have seen it in a diagram in Ecklers but no part number.

Cannot say for sure for the '74 but you can find the belts for the '73 (which should be the same) at The '73 Spot below. Just go to Technical Information and the Fan Belt Usage Chart.

You may have to do this "trial & error". Many of the original belts were either 7/16" or 3/8" and many(some)new belts may either be metric sized(although they say inches, many are just rounded to the closest inch).

TOM73 It shows the belt in the diagram but not the list. This is the problem I am finding. I have trial and error but am coming up with a lot of error. I am thinking that it takes a special belt.

I've been missing the primary water pump belt on my 74 454 ever since I've owned it - around 10 years. I got the correct GM belt from the Good Doctor - it came in a GM package.

I don't know the number off-hand, but you should be able to find it in the Good Doctor's catalog.

I haven't fired the motor yet, but I did replace the bearing in the idler.

Wouldn't it be the "Water Pump and Fan" belt. That is listed as just for the 454, part # 3952336, and is 15/32" wide & 31 7/8" long.
