Ok Guys & Gals here is another question about eliminating mufflers to enhance the sound of the exhaust.
I went to a custom exhaust shop today to ask about muffler eliminators to replace the coffee cans. They asked me what I was after and I explained I wanted a more throaty sound with out any more resonance in the cabin their suggestion was to eliminate what they called the third muffler. The reasoning behind this was that it has a 2 1/2" pipe coming into it and a 2 3/4" pipe coming out of it with a 1 7/8" pipe through it. They say this was done only to make the exhaust quiter from the factory and it gives the most bang for the buck. They were willing to do this for $75.00. They did state that it would probable make the cabin noisier. My question is have any of you done this and what was your impression on how much it increased the cabin noise.
Is this the thing the 2 Y pipes are connected to? I often wondered what that was. Looks like a big muffler to me. Might have the boys at the local muffler shop look eliminating this. I love the sound the mid year big blocks with sidepipes make. Wonder if you would get that effect?
I think that's called a resonator. On a big motor like this you odn't need one. On smaller 4 cyl motors it can take out a lot of unwanted frequencies and really help the sound. I'd throw it away though.
Thats the one the resonator that sits between the engine and rear end.
I would still leave the stock mufflers. As I see it there are two pipes 2 1/2" going into a 1 7/8" passage then back to a 2 3/4" outlet pipe. In effect the size of the pipe before or after does'nt matter because the smaller pipe is the controlling factor in exhaust efficency. You simple can not flow more than the smallest opening wheither it is water or gases. If this is not to loud it would be the poor mans upgrade to a higher efficency exhaust.
I knew it had a name, resonator. Where would one find and X-pipe for replacing this? Do they make them or would a muffler shop have to do it?
I put a set of Flowmaster Super 40's on about a month ago. Sounds better, but just doesn't quite have that Corvette rumble. The resonator must be the bottle neck of the system.
a muffler shop would probably build one, you can probably find someone selling one, i've heard dr. gas mentioned that's all I know, I just put some canisters on the rear and I like the sound not sure about an x pipe, let me know how it sounds

I had the flowmaster cat back on my LT4...It sounded good, but it wasn't enough for me. So, I removed the resonator and put in straight pipes...It sounded much better. I had this for about 2 years before going to muffler elimns...I really like the sound now.

I took my center resonator off and put on chambered eliminator pipes. The interior noise is way less. When I get on it, my vette has a very agressive deep loud sound that I like. I have heard some of the expensive cat back systems and i really like the way mine sounds better. Plus it was about $500 cheaper.
