Help me protect myself!!!!
I've closed a deal for a slightly used "Side Effects" exhaust system. The seller lives in New York. I live in Kansas City.
When I asked him to ship C.O.D., he asked for a money order instead.
Should I do anything else before sending the payment? I don't want to offend the seller and lose my opportunity to purchase the system. So, what do you guys think I should do (if anything) to protect myself -- before sending payment?
Thanks for your help.
Gregg

How much extra burden is put on the seller to ship C.O.D.? Are they risking fees if the buyer doesn't accept? Does it cost them more? Maybe this person doesn't want to remove the system and ship it unless he's SURE the system will be accepted? It would be a pain in the *** if it came back. Since, he's had it advertised on the other forum since November -- he could easily think people aren't lining up to buy these! (Picture taking this off your car, shipping it, having it returned, then wondering if you can really sell it or need to re-install it).
If I ask again for this type of shipment, I'd like to know the details. (I've never shipped C.O.D. myself, so I don't know what's involved).

P.S. The pictures of his car look EXTREMELY pristine and he claims only 1K miles on the system.

Why don't you ask him for a phone # and speak to him directly? I can get a better read of a person, when in doubt, by speaking with them. I generally do this without exception on larger transactions and it has served me well to this point.

Besides, all the contracts in the world mean nothing if you aren't prepared to enforce it. It would cost thounds to recover hundreds. If you talk directly to him, and he seems straight up, go ahead. C.O.D. is best but sometimes faith is all we have. Good luck.
Emails are sufficient evidence in a small claims court. I personally would want him to send it COD. I think UPS only charges a few dollars for this service. Then give UPS the cashiers check. Neat & simple. Everybody wins.
Using COD is the best way to get your item and for teh seller to get paid.
Now we had a sitiuation not long ago where the buyer refused shipment, so the seller was out $200 for the shipping charge.
COD will add around $7(maybe $10 by now) to the shipping charge.
If you refuse shipment without good reason(like damage or missing items), you will **** off the seller. If you accept it, teh seller and you will both be happy.
i am the seller of the side exhaust i don't ship cod. i no what i have it is in mint condition. to take this system off the car is a pain but no big deal but if the buyer has a beef OR UPS DAMAGES THIS ON SHIPPING guess what it's coming back. it took me a day and a half to fit this system. i also don't want the buyer to feel like he might get ripped off. so i will not be selling them outside of ny. sorry
COD will make sure the package arrives, but thats about it. I don't think the UPS driver is gonna hang around while you open the package and inspect it. I'm a delivery driver (not for ups) and when your doing 100+ stops a day your not hang'n out.
Just curious here, is this an entire exhaust system for your car? If so, hang on to your hat when it comes to shipping costs. If it is the entire exhaust, UPS will not take it, will have to send by commercial freight. And it will be expensive, first to crate, second to ship.
When I bought my Corvette the previous owner had put on a modified exhaust system, but had the original entire system hanging from his rafters. I looked into having it shipped as I flew up to buy the car and drive it home (AL to OH). I found out it was much cheaper in the long run to take a weekend and drive up to get it.
In your case, this might be a good idea, you can pay cash, see what you are getting, and load it up for the return trip. If I were the seller, and knowing what shipping costs can run, I wouldn't send it COD either because of the possible refusal on your end and having to pay shipping.
Hey, a four-day weekend trip to NY could be a fun trip for you and the s/o!!

I appreciate 6spd's response, concern, and wanting to make sure buyers are treated fairly. Fact is, I didn't know Jim was a member of this forum and did not intend to indentify any particular person in my quest for information.
Because of his concern and openness, I have sent Jim an email asking that the transaction continue. And, I'm not looking for additional response to this thread.
Thanks for your comments everyone, and I hope to hear from Jim soon.
