Default Shift boot replacement

I just got a new shift boot for my 1994 6 speed coupe. Any tips on how to install it with the minimum of hassle? My shop manual is in storage and inaccessible. Thanks for any help you all can provide.

you need to remove a few bolts under the console, one under the cup holder. If you want to be real cautious remove the lid of the console(I just wiggle it out). On the bottom of your center there are 4 screws remove those. Then you have to remove your shift ****, pull off the center cap with a screw driver, then use something to protect your leather because you're going to stick your screwdriver under the lip on the key in the center, tap into it a little with a hammer(like a chisel) then lightly tap on the driver to raise the key, no effort, much easier than prying or pulling. Good Luck

Don't use a screwdriver to get the wedge out.

DO it inthis order-

remove shift ****. Take a thin blade screwdriver to pry out the shift pattern cap.

Then take some small vise grips and clamp on to the wedge. Then tap gently in an upward fashion with a hammer till the wedge slides out.

If the shift **** has never ever been removed the screwdriver method may work. But if it has ever been attempted, there is a good chance that the little lip you would pry up on may be all chewed up(as mine was). So why chance it, just use the vise grip method.

Now you'll have a screw under the ashtray and two in the console area.
Not sure about '94 but for 95 and 96 you'll have to remove the console door to get the shifter console plate out.
After all the screws are removed, you need to disconnect the hatch release button and the cig lighter.

After that it will be plain to see how to replace the boot.

Installation is opposite of reverse.

If you don't have an ashtray insert or those rubber cups, now is the time to clean out all that change you'll find in there.

the vise grip did not work, because the space is too small to fit around the key, and you aren't prying on the key, tapping it, if you don't gorilla it, you can't hurt anything, and even if someone tried before you, and chipped it you can tap the driver into the side,(it's soft) and remeber there are two sides to work from.

Default Thanks for the tips

I'll give her a go one night this week. I am anxious to see how it looks. I am changing from a black one to a red one to complement my two tone seats.

Long nose vise grips work well and there is no chance of marring the leather on the top of your shift ****.

That's what I was going to suggest. I have 2-3 pairs of these and they work great for small stuff.

Just wish there were custom ***** for autos, besides the leather and carbon fiber ones.
