I recently was in a heated bidding war w/someone on e-bay. I was bidding on a bose stereo for my '84. I got up to 130 and gave up, Dr. Dons can fix mine for a little more than that.
Then I get an e-mail from some guy name Chris Wright. He says he's got the same radio in great shape and he'll take my final bid for $130. He sent some pics, it looks great, but it seems to good to be true.
Oh yea, he is throwing in 4 deck speakers for free. He sent pics of those too, a little rough but I'll take 'em.
So has anybody ever heard of this guy????
Any suggestions???
Thx for any help!!!!!!
Does he have an account that you can check to see if he sells similar items that he's trying to sell to you, or at least that he has good feedback? If you want some reassurance, have him create an auction so if he doesn't send it you can have ebay investigate and get your money back. If he won't create the auction, you know for sure he's no good.
He said he was putting up for auction this spring......WHY NOT NOW?
I could really use that receiver, but it just seems fishy! Maybe I'll just wait for it to go on auction!
Eboler has the right idea. Ask Mr. Wright what his ebay screen name is and check on his feedback history. This will give you some idea how he conducts himself on ebay.
What happened to you has happened to me. I lost an auction because I did not want to bid higher and I received an unsolicited email asking if I wanted to purchase the same item for what I had bid. Purchasing the item this way prevents you from utilizing ebay's safeguards, but you always have other options if the seller turns out to be a thief. You can always contact the attorney general's office, notify the postal inspectors and contact the the Interstate Commerece Commission, to name a few.
My transaction that I spoke of went well. Prior to sending the money, I checked his ebay history, including his feedback. Only after I was satisfied that he was a reputable member of ebay, did I send him the money. If possible, PayPal him the money. Then you always have the option of backcharging the item.
Do not inform ebay of this if you intend to purchase the item outside of an ebay auction. They frown on these types of transactions mainly because they aren't getting "their cut" of the auction listing.
If Mr. Wright has a decent history with ebay, I wouldn't have any reservation about purchasing the stereo from him. My take on this is that he saw that you had bid on the auction and lost and knowing that he was going to sell his Bose stereo in a few months, he decided to contact you to see if he could make an early sale, outside of ebay, so he could save the auction fees.
Another reason I was suggesting a follow up on his sale was because I used to be a frequent seller on ebay, and often I would look for bidders who almost won but didn't. Good way for an easy sale in the eyes of a seller.
On the other hand I'm nervous saying this... I don't want to be the reason you get screwed. Anyhow, you have a few peoples take on the situation - hopefully everything goes well.
I just need the receiver. His vette caught fire(loose tranny line laid on the exhaust and ignited) and he had an after market stereo and speakers. He said he left the bose amp in behind the new speakers, he said he didn't want to mess with taking them out.
In his defense he has sent plenty of pics. He also said shipping would be around $15. If it was any more he would spring the difference.
Like others have said, find out his E bay screen name and check his feedback. My son was bidding on something on E bay that never sold. He contacted the seller by Email and purchased it off auction. My son is 15 years old and already knows everything. I told him not to do it. He said that if anything happened, Pay Pal would refund his money. Pay just responded this morning after a 15 day investigation. They said that the seller was at fault but they are unable to recover the funds ($ 100.00). Pay Pal said that if he had purchased it on E Bay that he may be able to recover part of his loss. If the buyer has good feed back as him to list the item on E Bay and use a buy it now option.
Good Luck
