hello everyone, 1st time registering, but i've been viewing this site fro a few weeks since I bought my 1st vette. 1991 white conv, red int..... I hope to get some good advice from some of you enthusiasts. My 1st problem issssssss... my stereo.. I want to swap it out, I bought a double din kenwod ddx, sinsce I've seen the mods that could be done. My question is this, where the H*ll do i hook the gm wire harness to?? I took out the bose stereo and saw the 2 conectors, but they are no fit for the GM harness i have from metra. any ideas??? would appreciate all the help possible....... yes i have searched the site for answeres for a few days, but have not found wiring options.... thanx a million, Pete
Bogus, your thread is actually the link that brought me to this great forum (after i did a web search). I did read it, and I just walked when I made the 1st post sayin to myself...i'm gonna look like an idiot for posting this..lol... but my main concern was that there are so many harnesses and wires in the work area.....are the 3 that hook into the gm harness adaptor plugged into the silver receiver box? and do i HAVE to replace speakers because of the 2ohm situation and new receiver, only asking the last part because an owner of a stero shop said no.
I think there is a power adaptor, but, in my FAQ, I give instructions on how to make your own.
All the power leads are on the reciever module. Now, on a Vert, that might be in the back hatch area, but I am not 100% sure. I think it's still in the dash. The best way to reach it is to remove the glove box.
Disconnect the plug from the reciever (one is the speaker feeds, the other, the power set) and tap into those wires.
You will want to make a 4 wire harness to go from there to the head, yellow (memory), black (ground), blue (antenna) and red (power). Take these 4 wires and spin them in a drill to make the harness. You will also need an extension and adaptor for the antenna.
You must replace the speakers. I don't like the use of adaptors, and the bose speakers (actually 1 ohm) will kill your head unit (or external amp).
Check CDT or Infinity... they make some nice speakers that are very affordable.
cool, In the morning I will just tap into the power harness and take it from there, i'll leave an update after some more cut fingers and lost screws
thanx for yer help
I have mine 90 Coupe torn apart right now and was looking for a little more information than what is in your thread. This is very helpful. I made the harness and remounted new speakers. Just need to put the new head unit in and wire it up. Bogus your thread is great.
Pictures would help us rookies though... Just a thought...
oh well oh welllllllllllll....i gave in, after another 3 hours in some karma sutra postition tryin to find antenna leads and attempting to get to the cdm box, I finally brought her to the stereo shop!!!! Main St Stereo on 27 in Sayville, Long Island...... I ended up purchasing all MMatt speakers in a nice fiberglass custom enclosure in my lil space in the back ( about 4" of the back wall) consisting of 1 12" woofer on a kenwood amp 800 watt (bridge mono) and 2 6" for mid's...and going with 3 way components up front with the same kenwood amp into 4 channel mode for the 2 6's and the front components (6"low,4"mid and tweeters on the pillars facing the windshield) with a custom installation of my double din kenwood ddx that will be flush as stock...the total for it all was 3400. but after we spoke and had some mutual friends, got him to 2800. (i told wifey it was 1400.) =/ I know it's a bit expensive, but the install quality at the place is second to none... I had some comfort seeing Ja-Rules & Zab Juda's Trucks in their bays gettin sick new installations,a long list of celebrities that got their cars done their as well, mostly N.Y. Jets , dozens of competition trophy's and magazine write ups framed everywhere..... guess the chrome rims r gonna have to wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! will post pix after I get her back Saturday.
waterdog, i almost pissed on myself!!!!..i was like...did this guy finish already and post pix????? lmao..I have the same interior, actually same car..but u have a KILLER kit, excellent car man!!!..but i am PSYCHED if this install is set like yours, nice & high: out of the shifters way (for viewing in park)..can't wait..thanx for the pic
